VirginMobileUSA has come out with pay on demand Broadband2go.
I have been waiting for something like this for years! No contracts, no muss no fuss. Have you ever been checked into a hotel room where the "Free Internet Access" and a 802.11B router with 200 users??? . Rates are pricy but competitive when looking at hotel room rates, or when you are 15 minutes before a presentation and you can't get access at the location working.

One note of warning, it lists Linux drivers. However, this is presenting challenges. I have spent several nights working through Ubuntu 9.05 with no joy, but I can pass through the usb port to a XP virtual machine and get connected.
